Everyone should wear a bike helmet when they go out for a ride, but that’s especially important for kids.

In 21 states and the District of Columbia, children are actually required to wear bike helmets, according to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. And many cities and towns have similar mandates.

Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making it easier for kids and parents to focus on the fun of a bike ride itself.
