Smarter: What CR Experts Want for Holiday Gifts
Here are my gifts to you, dear readers, this week: a roundup of items that CR staff members would want on their own holiday wish lists.
Also in this issue: The most important food safety mistakes to avoid, and have you ever heard of a potted Christmas tree? (I know I didn’t before.)
THE BIG STORY:
‘There’s Nothing Like the Present’December is the season of gift-giving, so I went to the people who are passionate about products—CR’s writers, editors, and testers—to ask what they would want most for the holidays. After all, these experts spend their days researching, using, and testing a long list of products from air fryers to cars. Simply put, they know their stuff.
Here are the items they shared with me. Some receive recommendations because we’ve used—and loved—them. Many are products that have been evaluated or tested by CR and received top scores in our ratings.

TIP OF THE WEEK
48 million people get sick every year from something they ate, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. To avoid food poisoning, here are some food safety mistakes to look out for. (You can read the full list here.)
Your fridge temperature can be too high, which might cause bacteria to spread. For food safety, our experts say your fridge should be 37° F and your freezer should be no higher than 0° F.
Your kitchen sponge has been around too long. Replace it once every one or two weeks—or when it starts to smell—so it doesn’t become a hotbed for bacteria growth.
You’re touching spice containers after preparing raw meat. Salt, pepper, and spice containers can be a huge source of cross-contamination.
Bonus link: When baking, it can be tempting to eat raw cookie dough—but is it safe?
THE SHORT ANSWER
Should you get rid of cooking oil by pouring it down the drain? Absolutely not.
QUIZ ANSWER
The answer is no. Hybrids don’t need to be plugged into an outlet or a charging station in order to run.
Hybrids combine a battery pack, an electric motor that drives the car at low speeds, and a gas engine that’s employed for higher speeds, climbing hills, or recharging the battery. They also feature regenerative braking, which uses the car’s momentum to create extra electricity. Some plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) can be plugged in to add extra (mostly electric) range, but they will still run like a traditional hybrid even if you don’t.
So unlike a pure electric vehicle, you don’t have to plug in a hybrid. Instead, you can just refuel at a gas station.
