Tired of shoveling snow off your driveway and sidewalk? Consider purchasing a battery-powered snow blower.

Consumer Reports has been testing battery-powered snow blowers for more than six years. Over that time period these tools, which are sometimes called cordless or cordless electric snow blowers (or snow throwers), have been improving by leaps and bounds.

ā€œBattery snow blowers are really nipping at the heels of comparably sized gas models, and they offer advantages that gas snow blowers canā€™t match,ā€ says Dave Trezza, who oversees CRā€™s snow blower tests.

Chief among them is that cordless snow blowers need neither gasoline nor oil, not to mention engine maintenance. They also start instantly witha7003336282 the push of a button and tend to run much quieter than gas models. Theyā€™re lighter and easier to handle, too.

But battery snow blowers arenā€™t for everyone. They come mostly in a single-stage configuration (there are only seven two-stage models currently in our ratings), and they canā€™t plow as much snow. They can move 6 to 9 inches of snow per pass, while some of the bigger gas snow blowers can handle snow thatā€™s 18 inches deep in one pass.Ā

For a deep dive into the differences among typesā€”and to learn why we use water-saturated sawdust to test snow blowersā€”check out our snow blower buying guide.

Below, CR members can read ratings and reviews of the four best battery-powered snow blowers from our tests. Weā€™ve also included a power snow shovel for those who need to clear decks or small patios of a few inches of the white stuff. For even more options, see our complete snow blower ratings, which include more than 70 models in six configurations.

When I'm not writing about home products, I can be found putting them to the test, often with help from my two young children, in the 1860s townhouse I'm restoring in my free time.
