CPSC Issues Warning on Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double and Ultra Strollers
A toddler's death was tied to entrapment by a pivoting canopy on a stroller
The Consumer Product Safety Commission and manufacturer Baby Trend are advising owners of the brand’s Sit N’ Stand Double and Ultra strollers to take precautions with regard to a pivoting front canopy that could pose an entrapment danger to children. The stroller has been blamed in the death of one child and injuries to another.
The warning applies to Sit N’ Stand Double and Ultra strollers with model numbers beginning with SS76 or SS66.
According to the CPSC, the space directly in front of and behind each stroller’s pivoting front canopy can trap a child’s head or neck if a non-occupant child climbs on the stroller’s exterior, or when a child in the front seat isn’t restrained using all five points of the harness. The double stroller was tied to the asphyxiation death of a 14-month-old who was not seated in the stroller but whose neck became trapped between the canopy tube and armrest. The company also reported that a 17-month-old suffered neck bruises as a result of being trapped between the back of the canopy tube and the seat back of the front seat. That child was only partially secured. CR recommends fully securing children in their stroller seats, and not letting them climb into strollers themselves.
Consumer Reports has tested but does not recommend the convertible-style Baby Trend Sit N’ Stand Double stroller. CR has not tested Baby Trend’s Sit N’ Stand Ultra stroller.
